Frequently Asked Questions:

Do I need to remove the stock from the gun?

We are not an FFL. DO NOT send us the firearm. You will need to remove the stock from your gun before you send it to us, otherwise we cannot accept it.

Do you provide the Stocks?

No.  The customer must provide the stock fully stripped of the firearm (receiver) and all hardware for modification.   If you are uncomfortable doing so yourself, we recommend you have a skilled local Gunsmith to do that for you.

Do I need to provide design files, or can you create the design?

While we focus on custom one offs, we can also work from a client’s image. Please email us your image and we will let you know if we can achieve the desired result.

Can you engrave wood grips?

Yes! We can engrave wood pistol grips with images, text and/or checkering. We are not able to complete photo engraving on pistol grips due to the small size.

Do you sell stocks and grips?

No, we only customize what clients send in.

Can you engrave wood knife handles?

Yes!

Is laser engraving permanent?

Yes, the engraving process uses a laser that engraves the design down into the stock.

What are the limitations for engraving?

We only laser wood stocks, no synthetics. We are unable to do a continuous wrap engraving around the various sides of the stock. We are also limited by the quality of photo provided. Photos must be clear and at least 300dpi. Preferably, uploaded files should be .bmp or .tiff. You may also upload .gif, .png, or .jpg

Is the design printed or engraved onto the products?

Our designs are burned into the surface of the product using a laser engraver. This is not a decal or printing process but is actually burned down into the surface. It will not rub off or wear down over time. Different products are engraved to varying depths for the best contrast and final appearance.

Do you refinish stocks?

No, we only apply a coat of tung oil over the engraved area to protect the stock. We will not disturb the original finish on any other areas of the stock.

What color will my engraving be?

The engraving process involves our laser burning natural wood. Since each piece of wood is different, the engraving color will vary. Wood type also affects the engraving color as walnut will engrave dark and maple or birch will be a lighter burned color.

Will I receive a design proof?

Yes! You will receive a design proof prior to us beginning the engraving or checkering process. You will have the opportunity to request one round of changes to the design when you receive the proof. Additional versions of the proof will have a 15% additional charge. We will make sure that you are completely satisfied with the design, and we have your approval before we begin. You must provide a valid email address when you place your order so we can send you the design proof for approval.

What if I don’t want to engrave on my original stock?

If you have a stock that you don’t want to engrave for any reason, we suggest obtaining an aftermarket stock for you to have engraved. This way you always have the original if you ever want to put it back on the gun.

Can my checkering be repointed?

We do not repoint old checkering. However, we can remove the original checkering by blasting over the worn checkering and engrave new checkering with our laser. We can create a custom design similar to the original checkering, or you can use the opportunity to change it up and pick a new checkering outline and/or pattern.

What is the average turnaround time?

For engraving and checkering it is currently 4 – 8 weeks. Please note that lead times are fluid and are subject to change without notice due to current workload, and do not include holidays or shipping times.

Do I pay before the work is completed?

Yes, payment is required before any work is done to your stock. You may pay for your engraving in our store prior to sending it in. We will respond to your wood stock engraving form with a job approval code for you to put in at time of purchase.

Can you engrave any gun stock?

We can do most common wood gunstocks. Extremely dense, exotic hardwoods can be difficult and produce inconsistent results when laser engraving. Please be sure to specify what wood type on the wood gun stock form here.

Does engraving hurt the value of my firearm?

The stocks we engrave are usually custom one offs using our original artwork, sometimes with intwined writing such as last names. This makes the gun priceless to the recipient, and it typically becomes a family heirloom. A firearm that is engraved with a high-quality design is very attractive in resale and typically sells for more than a non-engraved gun. A gun’s value is determined by how much someone is willing to pay for it, and a high-quality engraving will always draw attention. However, depending on the type of firearm, engraving the stock could decrease its value. Dust Storm Engraving is not responsible for any loss of value due to altering your firearm from its original condition.

Will laser engraving void the factory warranty?

Absolutely.  Laser engraving is a permanent modification that cannot be reversed. Doing a full teardown might not void anything but engraving it will probably void any warranty you have. But it will look way cooler!
